To all the boys (and girls) I've loved..., 2006 soap, hair, mirrors This mixed media installation was a result of my introduction to Myspace. At the insistence of friends, I joined and created a profile, and before I knew it a strange variety of people from my past were contacting me. (Why now? Because it is instant? Because you are lonely, bored, curious? Me too. But, I would have been fine with just the memory of you.) A few loves that I had long since forgotten all of a sudden wanted to “friend” me on Myspace. I was intrigued by the notion of collecting people in this way, and how becoming reacquainted with these people somehow seemed like an awkward form of time travel. I became interested in the false sense of intimacy and proximity that social forums facilitate. As an experiment, I asked each former love who contacted me to mail me an envelope of their pubic hair. Most of them did, and some were much more generous than others. I styled the collected specimens on individual bars of soap in a pattern that most suited what I recalled of the “shape” that the relationship had taken, as well as the personality of the donor. The installation consists of a sealed room lit solely by a red neon sign. In the back of the room a bathtub placed upon a pedestal made of bars of soap serves as a reliquary/shrine to love that has been shared and has passed. Four heated humidifiers inside of the pedestal run throughout the duration of the show. Viewers entering the room are instantly confronted by thick damp air that smelled strongly of soap. A red velvet kneeler at the base of the bathtub serves as a quiet place for viewers to reflect upon, pay homage to, or let go of previous relationships. |
