TEACHING EXPERIENCE

2009-2010      Lecturer, College of Creative Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara, CA

Responsible for designing and teaching three upper division courses- one per quarter- as part of a year long Lectureship awarded alongside a post-graduate teaching fellowship.

Course Descriptions:

Performance and Installation- This intensive workshop style course examines performance art and the human subject as an artistic medium, as well as the incorporation of performative elements within installation art.  The course culminates in an exhibition of performance and installation that is open to the campus and local community.

Alternative Art Distribution Systems- This course explores modes of exhibiting art outside of the White Cube. We will examine alternative distribution and dissemination methods such as mobile venues, art vending machines, unsanctioned public performances, culture jamming, piggybacking on established public systems (the postal service, newspaper stands, etc…), and a brief overview of community based practices. Students will complete individual projects as well as final collaborative projects that use alternative methods to curate and exhibit an art show.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration- Students pursuing degrees in ANY major or working in any artistic medium are encouraged to enroll. This course examines the shape/nature of contemporary collaboration. Using Sholette’s Collectivism After Modernism as a point of departure for discussion, breakout groups will evolve into project groups that will present collective final projects.  Critique and a proposal process are a major element of this course. Issues such as consensus, authorship, ownership, consensus, intellectual property, and open source will be explored in detail.  Attendance at additional campus wide lectures in a variety of departments will be required.
